Oklahoma City Bombing Response
Recognized nationally for the role our credit union played in assisting Federal Employee’s Credit Union reopen following the bombing in April 1995. Hearing that the majority of employees were killed or injured in the attack, and knowing that the credit union was on the same computer system as Fort Knox FCU, Mr. Rissel took initiative and assembled a group of volunteer employees to work as tellers and loan officers in place of the Federal Employees Credit Union staff. With their assistance the credit union reopened only two days after the disaster. In total, 20 Fort Knox Federal employees assisted in that credit union’s recovery. Though not sought, Mr. Rissel and Fort Knox FCU received national recognition for its assistance and the gratitude of Federal Employees Credit Union for its efforts. In addition, the Kentucky Credit Union League established an award in recognition of Fort Knox’s assistance to the movement.
